We are from Great Britain. The picture was taken in Roma colony in Bystrany, from which most Romas go to work to England (mostly in food industry). When returning home, they bring back among others cars of famous brands and brand clothes. Lots of houses have luxurious equipment, but the access road and the main “street” are in very bad shape. The mayor has been promising remedy for a long time, so we will see. (Bystrany, spring 2008) Author Jan Kocián, Prague

Return home safely. When returning from a trip in Slovenský ráj, I visited Roma colony near Letanovice, which has never been connected to electricity. Only six houses own power generator. Two boys were following me to the rail station. When we were passing by a wooden cross, I got an idea that we can pray here and also take beautiful photos with their colony in the background. The Romas are very religious and, after all, I also believe in something, so why not? Suddenly, one of the boys started to pray for me, so that nobody would attack me and I return home safely. It was very touching. Author Jan Kocián, Prague

A big family. Visiting Soňa Pokutová and her husband with whom she has 16 children. Soňa refused to be photographed, because she was just coloring her hair. They have recently been assigned a low standard flat, but lots of local Romas still live in wooden huts just under large mine dump, which can bury then any time. Council flats built for Romas in the direction of Markušovce have not been approved for living because of problems with electricity. Author Jan Kocián, Prague

Nane love, nane paťiv. In Eastern, Slovakia this Romani saying is ussually pronounced like: 'Nane love, nane páčiw', which means: „No money, no honour“. This boy is boasting with the second most valuable thing he has after his sister, that is, with a twentycrown note. But he did not get it from me.
