Transitions (www.tol.org), a Prague-based media development organization,
invites applications for participation in Colorful but Colorblind, a
learning-by-doing project for journalists aimed at promoting the creative
use of multimedia in reporting minority issues. The project will focus on
remedying anti-Roma stereotyping in the media. Ten journalists from the
Czech Republic (half Roma, half from the country’s majority group), will
attend an intensive week-long training workshop in Prague.
What will you learn? The training will concentrate on the skills and
techniques needed to produce professional quality audio-driven slide shows
and video stories, covering equipment and best practices for content
gathering and editing. The training will include numerous exercises, both in
the classroom and in the field. We will also highlight ethical
considerations of the multimedia genre and issues of sensitivity in the
practice of covering under-reported peoples and cultures. Translation from
English into Czech will be provided.
The training will be designed and directed by Rich Beckman, the Knight Chair
in Visual Journalism at the School of Communication at the University of
Miami and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Universidad de los Andes
in Santiago, Chile.
When? The training will take place in Prague between 7 and 11 June
Reporting Assignment: The participants will then be divided into groups—each
comprising one Roma journalist, one majority community journalist, and a
trainer—to go on a week-long reporting assignment between 18 and 24 July to
cover a story of common interest, producing a multimedia package under the
guidance of trainers.
When? Reporting assignments will be conducted between 18 and 24 July.
Who Can Apply? Professional journalists from the Czech Republic with
experience of, or strong interest in, reporting minority issues and
multimedia are eligible to apply.
Costs: The project organizers will cover the entire cost of participation,
including travel, accommodation and tuition fees. Top quality video, photo
and audio equipment will be provided.
