EU voices solidarity with Czech Republic in light of Canadian visas, but
does not discuss retaliation
The European Union has voiced its solidarity with the Czech Republic in
light of Canada’s decision to re-impose visas for Czechs, but at a meeting
of the bloc’s foreign ministers on Monday, plans to introduce retaliatory
visas for Canadians across the EU were not discussed. According to Swedish
Foreign Minister Carl Bildt after the meeting, any decision on whether to
implement visas for Canadians would first have to be discussed by the
European Commission. On Monday, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Kohout said that
no decision would be made by the commission before September. Ottawa decided
to re-implement visa restrictions for Czechs on July 14 after a wave of
Czech Roma applied for asylum in Canada.
