Life behind the bars. It is very easy to get in jail. The way out and a life with stigma of an outcast and someone socially undesirable is more complicated. Many criminals living in the world „outside“ the jail are glorified as great armyleaders, politicians or celebrities and their deeds of breaking the law are praised. On the other hand thousands of those who only broke lightly some rules set by those on the top gained a stigma for the rest of their lives, a stigma that is hard to get rid of – in soul and papers, too. The picture comes from prison Oracov and shows mostly Roma prisoners who came to watch Christmas party given by organisation Romodrom. Author Jiří Salik Sláma, Rešice

Alliance - workshop Kobylá. Organisation Commonwealth of Romas of Moravia as part of its projects runs a joiner’s shop in Kobylá above Vidnávka in Jeseniky region. In this shop the local unemployed people – largely Romas learn new skills and come to the shop to work for no money because they understand that expanding their qualifications can mean finding a job more easily in such a jobless region. The shop also plays a role of improvised community centre where family members of the shop workers meet and the products from the shop serve the whole neighbourhood. The picture shows two workmen, Roma and non-Roma holding a wheel – the symbol of Romas. Both of them are dressing and grinding the wheel. Similarly, work helps to file out human relations in the shop. Author Jiří Salik Sláma, Rešice

The Congress of KDU-ČSL where mayor of Vsetín Jiří Čunek was elected the chairman of the party was accompanied by protests of Prague NGOs´ activists. They were trying to point out that a cheap antiroma populism used as a means to gain power is dangerous. The congress agreed with them. Jiří Čunek was elected the chairman of the party and has yet been building his career on antiroma statements. Author Jiří Salik Sláma, Rešice

A Memento. In the collecting camp in Lety near Písek hundreds of Romas died during the 2nd World War. The camp had not been established as annihilation camp, yet hunger and diseases carried off many lives. The camp was under the administration of Protectorate gendarmerie who were eagerly complying with Nazi commands. In the picture Čeněk Růžička is speaking. He is from The Committee for Compensation of the Roma Holocaust (VPORH) whose family had gone through the camp. Next to him can be seen a part of the present-day memorial, at which a reverent ceremony is served every year. Růžička has been fighting for the abolishment of the piggery that stands where the camp used to be; up to now it has been a futile fight. Author Jiří Salik Sláma, Rešice

Harmony. The International Day of Romas in Brno is commemorated by a group of NGOs and some individuals. Tying up fillets on the young tree, planted by Karel Holomek in the yard of presbytery in Zábrdovice, has become a tradition. Priest Rous, who works here, is holding a Roma boy who is tying up one of the fillets. Author Jiří Salik Sláma, Rešice

Fuck off ghetto. When so called Gabal’s report about the situation in poverty ghettos was published, it was all the rage in media. One story was followed by another, but the interest of media gradually faded away. However nobody said that it is market economy and merciless money oriented system that is creating ghettos in the centres of cities. The photograph from Nový Jičín is an example, where municipal authorities, under the pressure of developers connected to them, are driving Roma families out of their houses in the centre and creating slums on the outskirts of the city. There are surely no joyous prospects for the children playing under the barbed wire among heaps of rubbish. Author Jiří Salik Sláma, Rešice

For the pleasure of music This year’s (2008) International Day of Romas. Carnival parade with actors, musicians and dancers walked, while attracting attention of Brno inhabitants, through the city and stopped at the yard of the gallery-access house in Bratislavská street, where DROM centre resides. Many inhabitants of the house could enjoy an improvised concert and short acted performances. No exaggerated acting, just a gathering of ordinary people and joy of music and theatre. Author Jiří Salik Sláma, Rešice

Incommunicable Experience. Old Mr. Suchý has lived through many things. He survived the concentration camp where he went through infamous hands of doctor Mengele; then harsh fifties when he made his living by selling brooms which he used to sell in the neighbouring Poland where he had to walk. He crosses these borders until now, sometimes he does so several times a day when he goes for water. The well by his house is situated near the road and already belongs to the Polish territory. The village to which Mr Suchý´s belongs refuses to establish water connection up the hill. Author Jiří Salik Sláma, Rešice
