A Dance with Mom for Her 70th Birthday. Photographed in a Prague suburb, 2007. This woman survived the Holocaust of Czech Roma. Most of her family died in Auschwitz or in another concentration camp. There is a lot of discourse about the camp in Lety, Bohemia (it's 'the Czech camp that's now a pig farm'), but this woman's grandmother, for example, was killed by Moravian guards in the protectorate-run camp at Hodonin.

Break dance. I took these photos while living in Roznov pod Radhostem. The pictures were taken on a Saturday afternoon after a Jarmark, the stalls were being cleaned. Some of my students, who are Roma, showed up and started to break dance on the main square. It was one of those beautiful, spontaneous, perfect events that so rarely happen in life.
Author Daniel Pratt, Chicago

A Spring of Gold. I took this picture in one of Prague´s parks at the beginning of May in 2008. At first, I turned my attention to some older Roma children, who were being vulgar, or were shooting little stones at each other from a rifle, which was dangerous for themselves and the other playing children. Their antipole made the children in the photos. They were playing on the other side of the playground. I chose to photograph those.
