Waiting for the EU, Saint Denis. These people had watched Romania’s entry into the EU with great anticipation. They expected greater opportunities and, above all, the chance to work without work permits. Even though people in this community have to fight for every piece of metal and every cent, these Roma do not want to return to Romania at any time in the near future. After the fall of Communism, one of the main things that changed for them was job security in Romania’s factories and other state enterprises. They found themselves out on the street practically overnight, and the state ceased to take care of them. “In France, if you’re on the street, at least somebody will give you something, but in Romania no one has anything to give.” (Paris, 2006) Author Lukáš Houdek, Prague

A washbasin, me and my mother, Saint Denis. Four or five years ago, a large group of Kalderash Roma settled in an infamous Paris suburb, having left their families in Romania due to harsh living conditions and now seekin a better life in the West. Upon arrival, however, they faced something of a shock. No one was waiting for them with open arms or with multiple offers of work. They spent all their savings and settled on a field, in the vicinity of the glass and iron of French industrial skyscrapers. Hundreds of Roma live here without running water or electricity, but they still keep their living traditions and sense of hospitality. (Paris, 2006) Author Lukáš Houdek, Prague
