Helsinki Committee Report on Human Rights in 1998
Radio Prague, April 23rd - The Czech Helsinky Committee has published its annual report on the state of human rights in the Czech Republic. Vladimir Tax looks at its main points.

Czech society is still a "society of the majority population", the report writes, and states that the year 1998 did not see a shift towards a finer balance between economic interests, wealth and consumption on the one hand, and respect for life, nature, and civic society on the other.

I asked the Czech Helsinki committee's legal expert Miroslav Krutina about the main shortcomings in human rights in the Czech Republic.

As Mr. Krutina says there are problems in many areas, but it would be hard to say that some of them are more serious than the others. He explained that there are usually more problems in areas where the law is confronted with everyday life. This concerns especially the work of the police and their encounters with groups on the margin of society.

Nevertheless, the overall situation is improving.

And how does the Czech Republic compare to other former East-bloc countries? Mr. Krutina says that the situation is almost identical across Central and Eastern Europe, but that there is a stark contrast with the Western part of the Old Continent.
